Icons: Terms of use violations

Fri Jan 29, 2010, 4:05 AM
:iconlinebirgitte:

I am currently having a huge problem concerning the terms of use of my icons.
I always add Creative Commons 3.0 license whenever I upload icons or wallpapers on DeviantArt but it seems that people disregard the "license" part.
My point on CC terms is that the web community may use my icons for customization purposes only!
Whenever I come to see violations of the terms of use of my icons, I always sent an e-mail to either remove them (if they violate the "Noncommercial" and "No Derivative Works" terms) or to make a reference of the creator and add that "this work is under Creative Commons license".
So far I've located randomly CC violations of my Archigraphs icons, and they all abided to my e-mails.
Yesterday I found a web page that uploads icons and vectors without creator's reference, without terms of use reference.
That's bad. :(
Wrote them a mail (cause some of my icons are included) but I think that the community should know if by any other way their creations' terms of use are violated.
The website is www.youtoart.com

Regards
Myrto Orfanoudaki Simic

Jeez. Legally, they're required to abide by your terms. Be sure to note groups that follow theft with your concerns so that there are more people reporting, and e-mailing them. There are several groups that will help you a lot with this sort of thing.

Theft sucks, period, and shouldn't be allowed. Not posting your work just lets them win. If they make commercial usage, you can get money from them for them profiting off of work you did not give permission to use in such a manner. I will help report and e-mail; I'm in more than one group that deals with this sort of thing on a daily basis, and our most important goal is protecting other artists right's.

Theft is bigger issue when Creative Commons Terms of use are involved.
Currently, I provide that kind of work for free but only for personal customization purposes.
That means that you may use my work to enhance your desktop of you computer.
So violating those free-to-use-only-for-personal-purposes terms is even worst than if my creations where under Copyright.
And, no, I am not selling them.
That's the whole point.
I am just providing them to the web community for free.
That's a good thing!
Money, and cost are not issues and that's why I chose those terms (CC).
Thanx for the reference of those "anti-theft" groups.
I'll check it out.

I think you should be pissed off! Theft is theft, thank you very much. This is not much different from plagiarism, so I hope that the Deviant community will report these 'thefts' ... I know that I will. All of your hard work enhances my life, so I would be remiss not to help by keeping an eye out for abuses and reporting them. Thieves, beware!

Stop posting your icons here. Just my two cents.

Cheers
